Overview

Circular economy advisory is the analysis of how materials flow through an organisation and the design of measures that keep them in use for longer, through waste prevention, reuse, recycling and recovery of by-products. It moves beyond compliant disposal to reduce raw material demand, disposal costs and environmental impact, and it produces a prioritised strategy and roadmap that management can fund and track.

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative have placed resource efficiency and waste diversion firmly on the national agenda, and the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN) is developing the market for recycling and recovery. For businesses, this creates both pressure and opportunity. Disposal is becoming more regulated and more visible, while materials that were once treated as waste can increasingly be reused within the operation, sold as secondary raw materials or supplied to other industries as inputs.

Circularity starts with evidence. A material flow analysis follows raw materials, products, packaging, water and by-products through the operation and shows where losses occur and what they cost. This often reveals that a small number of streams account for most of the material lost, and that some of those losses can be prevented through changes in procurement, process settings, packaging or product design. Other streams may have a value as feedstock elsewhere, provided their quality is consistent and the right partners and approvals are in place.

Selorin works with operations, procurement and finance teams to quantify material flows, identify and screen circular opportunities, and assess their technical, regulatory and commercial feasibility. We look at prevention first, then reuse, recycling and by-product valorisation, and we test each option against practical constraints such as quality, volumes, logistics and market demand. The outcome is a circular economy strategy and roadmap with prioritised initiatives, owners, indicators and expected benefits, linked to your ESG reporting where relevant.

When you need this service

You may need this service when:

  • Raw material and disposal costs are significant and you want to know where materials are lost.
  • Leadership has set waste diversion or resource efficiency goals without a plan to reach them.
  • Your process generates by-products that may have value to other industries.
  • Customers or investors ask how your products and operations address circularity.
  • You are designing a new plant or product line and want to reduce waste from the start.
  • Recycling initiatives exist but results are inconsistent and benefits are not measured.

What we deliver

01

Material flow analysis

A quantified map of materials, packaging, water and by-products through your operation, showing inputs, losses, costs and where each stream ends up.

02

Waste prevention review

Identification of process, procurement, packaging and design changes that reduce the amount of material becoming waste in the first place.

03

Reuse and recycling options

Assessment of internal reuse and external recycling routes for priority streams, including quality requirements, volumes, logistics and potential partners.

04

By-product valorisation

Screening of by-products for use as feedstock or secondary raw material, with technical, regulatory and commercial feasibility considerations clearly set out.

05

Business case for initiatives

Estimated costs, savings, environmental benefits and risks for shortlisted initiatives, presented in a form that supports investment decisions.

06

Circular economy roadmap

A prioritised, phased plan with initiative owners, milestones and performance indicators, aligned with your sustainability and ESG commitments.

Our approach

  1. Set objectives

We agree scope, priorities and constraints with management, and identify the data and teams needed.

  2. Map material flows

We quantify material inputs, losses and outputs using purchasing, production and waste records, verified on site.

  3. Identify opportunities

We generate options across prevention, reuse, recycling and by-product valorisation with operations teams.

  4. Screen feasibility

We assess each option for technical, regulatory and commercial feasibility and estimate its benefits.

  5. Build the roadmap

We prioritise initiatives, define owners, milestones and indicators, and present the strategy for approval.

  6. Track progress

We help set up measurement and review results so the roadmap is adjusted as initiatives mature.

Regulatory context

  • Waste Management Law and the role of the National Center for Waste Management (MWAN) in regulating waste activities and developing recycling and recovery.
  • Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) and Vision 2030 objectives for resource efficiency and environmental sustainability.
  • Environmental Law (2020) and its Implementing Regulations, where changes to processes, by-product use or waste routes affect permit conditions.
  • ISO 14040/14044 life cycle assessment principles, where the environmental benefit of circular options needs to be compared.
  • GRI Standards and Saudi Exchange ESG Disclosure Guidelines, where circularity results are reported to investors and stakeholders.

Requirements vary by activity, location and permit conditions. We confirm the applicable requirements for your project at the start of every engagement.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from your waste management service?

Waste management focuses on handling the waste you generate correctly: classification, storage, licensed transport and records. Circular economy work asks a different question: how to generate less waste and recover more value from the materials you use. It looks upstream at procurement, process and design, and outward at reuse, recycling and by-product markets. Many clients start with waste compliance and then move to circularity.

What data do we need to provide?

Typical inputs include purchasing records for raw materials and packaging, production volumes, waste quantities and disposal invoices, and process information for key lines. Data quality varies, so we combine records with site observations and interviews and state our assumptions clearly. Where measurement gaps are significant, we recommend simple ways to improve data collection so future progress can be tracked reliably.

Can we sell our by-products to other companies?

In many cases, yes, but it depends on the material, its consistency, the volumes available, logistics and whether the receiving use is permitted. Some by-products can move to another industry with little processing, while others need treatment or testing first. We screen the technical, regulatory and commercial conditions for each option, so you understand what is needed before approaching potential partners.

How do you prioritise circular initiatives?

We compare initiatives on expected savings, investment required, environmental benefit, implementation complexity and risk, and on how well they fit your operations and strategy. Prevention measures often rank highly because they reduce both purchasing and disposal costs. The roadmap usually combines quick, low-cost actions with longer-term projects, so early results build support for the larger investments.

How does circular economy work support ESG reporting?

Investors and reporting frameworks increasingly ask about resource use, waste generated, waste diverted from disposal and the initiatives behind those figures. A circular economy programme provides measured data and a documented strategy that can be reported consistently over time. We define indicators that align with the frameworks you use, such as GRI or the Saudi Exchange ESG Disclosure Guidelines, so operational results feed directly into disclosures.
