Industry overview

Food & Beverage

Food and beverage plants, including dairies, bakeries, meat and poultry processors, bottling lines and beverage producers, use large amounts of water and energy and produce wastewater with high organic loads, fats, oils and cleaning chemicals. Boilers, refrigeration systems, odour sources and packaging waste add to the facility's environmental profile under the Environmental Law and its Implementing Regulations.

Many plants operate in MODON industrial cities and discharge to shared treatment systems with their own acceptance conditions, while others run on-site treatment. In both cases, consistent sampling and pre-treatment performance are central to compliance. Food waste, by-products and rejected product also need controlled handling, and many streams can be diverted to animal feed, composting or other recovery routes under the Waste Management Law framework administered by MWAN.

Retail customers and consumers are paying more attention to packaging, food loss and the carbon footprint of products. Brand owners need reliable data on product footprints, packaging recyclability and water use to respond to customer requirements and to report on ESG performance.

Environmental challenges

Environmental challenges

01

High-strength wastewater

Process and cleaning water carries organics, fats and chemicals that must meet discharge conditions, often requiring pre-treatment and regular sampling.

02

Organic waste and by-products

Food waste, rejected product and by-products need controlled storage and recovery routes to avoid odour, pests and disposal costs.

03

Packaging footprint

Plastic bottles, films and cartons attract customer and regulatory attention on recyclability, recycled content and end-of-life.

04

Odour and refrigerants

Odour from processing and wastewater, and refrigerant leaks from cold storage, can trigger complaints and add to the facility's emissions.

05

Water and energy intensity

Water and energy use per unit of product affects both cost and sustainability reporting, and needs metering to manage.

Typical requirements

Typical requirements

Requirements vary by activity, location and permit conditions. We confirm the applicable requirements for your project at the start of every engagement.

  • Environmental operating permit, and industrial city requirements where the plant is in a MODON city
  • Process wastewater sampling and reporting for the approved discharge route or on-site treatment
  • Boiler emission and odour controls in line with permit conditions
  • Segregation, storage and recovery or disposal of organic and packaging waste under MWAN regulations
  • Refrigerant management records and leak checks
  • Environmental registers and records ready for inspection

How Selorin supports

How Selorin supports

  1. Permits and compliance

We confirm permit requirements, prepare applications and run compliance reviews against permit and industrial city conditions.

  2. Wastewater monitoring

We sample process and treated effluent, compare results to discharge conditions and identify sources and pre-treatment improvements.

  3. Organic and packaging waste

We map waste and by-product streams, identify recovery routes and support packaging decisions using circular economy principles.

  4. Product footprints and ESG

We calculate plant GHG inventories and product carbon footprints using ISO 14040/14044 and support ESG disclosures for brand owners.

Frequently asked questions

Our effluent sometimes fails the industrial city's acceptance limits. What should we do first?

Identify when and why. We sample across production and cleaning cycles to find the peaks, link them to specific processes, and recommend operational changes or pre-treatment improvements. Clear data also supports discussions with the treatment operator.

Can our food waste be recovered rather than landfilled?

Often yes. Depending on type and quality, streams can go to animal feed, composting or other recovery routes through licensed operators. We assess each stream, its volumes and storage conditions, and identify practical options.

A retailer asked for the carbon footprint of our products. Where do we start?

We define the product scope and boundaries, collect plant data on ingredients, energy, packaging and transport, and calculate the footprint following ISO 14040/14044 or a recognised product standard. The results also show where reductions matter most.
